Getting Started
What subscription tier do I need with Kahi to use the monitoring hardware?
If you are currently on a Tracking plan, you'll need to upgrade to the Tracking + Monitoring tier to access monitoring features and use the Enviro Sensors.
What hardware do I need to start using Kahi Monitoring?
To get started with monitoring, we recommend purchasing the following hardware:
Kahi Enviro Sensors (recommended minimum: 6)
1 for an external zone
1 for an unaffected zone
1 for an HVAC zone
3 or more for each affected zone
Kahi Job Site Gateway (optional but recommended for remote data collection)
Sensor carrying case (optional but useful for storing up to 10 sensors with probes attached)
What Kahi software do I need to start using Kahi Monitoring?
The Kahi Mobile App (iOS 18+ compatible) for provisioning sensors, setting up jobs, and manual data syncs.
The Kahi Web App for reviewing monitoring progress and downloading reports.
Note: Minimal cellular or Wi-Fi access is required onsite to complete Monitoring Session configuration.
How do I set up a new Monitoring Session in the Kahi app?
- Arrive at the job site and open the Kahi app.
- If the site isn’t listed, tap the ➕ icon to create it, fill in details, and tap Save.
- (Optional) Plug in the Job Site Gateway.
- Create a Chamber (Outside, HVAC, Unaffected, or Affected).
- Turn on the sensor, check its battery, attach it to the Chamber using NFC or QR scan.
- Physically install the sensor, then repeat for each additional Chamber.
- Once all sensors are installed, sync them in the app to begin data capture.
- Monitor the job through the Kahi Web App.
Can I use Kahi Monitoring without a Job Site Gateway?
Yes, you can—but without a gateway, technicians must manually visit the site and use the Kahi Mobile App to collect sensor readings daily.
How do I provision a new EnviroSensor to my organization?
Provisioning is automatic the first time you use a sensor:
- Bring the sensor to an active job site.
- Create a zone (Chamber) in the Kahi app.
- Turn the sensor on.
- Tap with NFC or scan the barcode to attach the sensor to the zone.
That initial scan auto-provisions the sensor to your organization and automatically updates the firmware—no extra steps needed.
Working with EnviroSensors
How do I turn a sensor on or off?
To turn on: Tap the power button once. All LEDs will blink once to indicate the sensor has powered on.
To turn off manually: Press the A button and the power button at the same time. The red and blue LEDs will blink twice.
Auto power-off: Sensors will automatically power down when removed properly during a teardown using the Kahi app.
How do I know if a sensor is powered on and ready?
A blue LED blink every 30 seconds indicates that the sensor is on and operating normally. To immediately check that a sensor is powered on hold down the A button. If the sensor is on, LEDs will light up to show the battery level. If it’s off, there will be no response.
How do I check the battery level on a sensor?
Press and hold the A button while the sensor is on. LED colors indicate battery charge:
- Green = >75%
- Yellow = 50–75%
- Red = <50%
Three red blinks = <25% — replace the battery before deploying
How long does the sensor battery last?
Approx. 1 year, depending on:
- Job frequency
- Environmental conditions
What should I do if a sensor’s battery dies during a session?
To resume data collection, replace the battery and power the sensor back on.
Use the Kahi Mobile App to connect to connect to the sensor, which:
- Resets the sensor’s internal clock
- Ensures proper timestamping for future data
What do the different LED light sequences mean?
- 1 blue blink: Normal operation
- 2 red blinks: Clock not set — Connect with app to sync time
- 1 blue + 1 red: Probe not connected — Reconnect probe securely
- 2 red + 1 blue + 1 red: Clock and probe not set/connected — Connect probe and sync time via app
- 3 red blinks: Battery below 25% — Replace battery
What should I do if I see red or mixed LED blinks on a sensor?
- Red only: Likely clock error — open the Kahi Mobile App and connect to the sensor.
- Blue + Red: Probe is disconnected — reconnect or replace if damaged or faulty.
- Three Red Blinks: Battery is critically low — replace immediately.
Why can’t I connect to a sensor in the Kahi app?
Likely causes:
- Sensor is powered off → Press A button to check.
- Weak signal → Move closer.
- Bluetooth issues → Toggle Bluetooth and try again.
- Rare case: Power-cycle the sensor (turn off, wait 30 seconds, turn on).
Why is it taking longer than usual to install a sensor in a chamber?
In most cases if sensor installation is slow it is due to weak cellular or Wi-Fi signal strength. Occationally this may be because the sensor has detected that its firmware needs updating and is automatically taking action to complete that update.
Rarely, a sensor can fail to connect during installation which will cause the action to time out. If this occurs:
- Ensure the sensor is powered on (Press A button to check),
- Turn the sensor off, wait 30 seconds, and then turn it back on and attempt to connect again.
What should I do if NFC or QR scanning isn’t working?
- NFC not working? Tap the small “X” on the “Ready to Scan” screen to switch to QR scanning.
- QR not working either? Try NFC again or use a different device.
If both fail, contact Kahi Support — the sensor may have a hardware issue.
How do I end a Monitoring Session if I can’t connect to a sensor?
- Go to the Chamber in the app.
- Tap the sensor you want to remove.
- When prompted to scan, tap the Help icon and select “Skip scan”.
- Confirm that you wish to remove the sensor without scanning.
⚠️ Only use this if absolutely necessary — skipping the scan may result in data inconsistencies or missed historical logs.
Can the EnviroSensors operate without an internet connection?
Yes! Kahi EnviroSensors do not require an internet connection to function. They will store data locally and can be collected manually to a device with cellular or Wi-Fi connection.
How should I store sensors between jobs?
- Store in a Sensor Case (fits up to 10 sensors).
- Keep probe attached to lead.
- Ensure sensors are powered off (they should auto-sleep after removal).
How can I replace a sensor during an active monitoring session?
- Install the new sensor first.
- Confirm it's working and reading properly.
- Then remove the old sensor to avoid closing the Chamber prematurely.
Why am I seeing strange or unexpected readings from a sensor?
- Acclimation issue: Sensors not allowed to stabilize for 30 min after transport.
- Environmental differences: Drafts, sunlight, or HVAC vents.
- Improper removal from previous job.
- Age of the sensor: The Probe has a maximum temperature drift of 0.010C annually and a maximum humidity drift of 0.5% RH annually.
In addition, while the risk of physical contamination (like dust, oil, or water) is low when the protective case is used, sensors can still be affected by chemical or vapor exposure from cleaning agents, adhesives, paints, solvents, smoke, or industrial chemicals.
What do I do if one of my sensors is grey and not showing updates in the Kahi Mobile app?
If this occurs power-cycle the sensor (turn off, wait 30 seconds, turn on).
Managing Chambers
How do I rename a Chamber?
You can rename a Chamber directly in the Kahi Mobile App:
- For Common Chambers (Outside, HVAC, Unaffected), you can rename them by following these steps:
- Open the Job Site Monitoring tab in the Kahi Mobile App.
- Select the Chamber you'd like to rename.
- Tap the edit icon or "Edit Chamber Name" option and enter the new name.
- For Affected Chambers, after creating and installing a sensor, you’ll be prompted to name the chamber—this name can also be edited later in the app.
How many Chambers can I Create?
You are provided with 3 default Common Chambers (Outside, HVAC, and Unaffected). That will become active once a sensor is installed You can add as many Affected Chambers as needed for the job site, depending on how many separate zones or rooms you’re monitoring. Each chamber must have at least one EnviroSensor installed to be active.
What do I do if I accidentally close a Chamber?
If you remove the last sensor from a Chamber, Kahi automatically marks it as complete—this ends that Chamber’s monitoring.
If you closed it by mistake:
- You can’t reopen it, but you can create a new Chamber with a similar name and re-install a sensor.
- To avoid this issue when swapping sensors, always install the new sensor before removing the existing one. This ensures the Chamber stays active and isn’t auto-closed
Why am I seeing duplicate or extra Common chambers listed in the Web App?
This usually happens when a Common Chamber was accidentally completed, and then a new sensor was installed into a "new" version of the same Chamber. Since Common Chambers can’t be deleted, each new instance shows up in the Web App.
To avoid duplicates:
- Be careful not to remove the last sensor from a Common Chamber unless the job is truly complete.
Data Capture & Review
How often do sensors take new readings?
- The Kahi Mobile App performs a passive sync every 12 seconds while open and in proximity to nearby sensors. Every 15 min the app will capture and clear historical sensor logs.
- The Job Site Gateway uploads new sensor data every 15 minutes.
Manual sync via the Kahi mobile App can also be triggered at any time to collect the latest historical data logs.
Why am I not seeing current readings from my sensors?
There are a few possible causes:
- The sensor is out of range of the Job Site Gateway.
- The sensor is powered off or the battery has died.
- The Gateway is unplugged or lacks a stable cellular signal.
- The app hasn’t synced yet—data may take up to 15 minutes to appear in the Web App.
What do I do if a sensor goes offline?
- Make sure it’s powered on by pressing the A button and checking the LED status.
- Replace the battery if needed (3 red blinks = <25% battery).
- After replacing the battery, connect via the Kahi Mobile App to reset the sensor’s clock (important for accurate timestamps).
- Sensors will resume transmitting data once powered on and properly connected.
What do I do if the Job Site Gateway loses power?
Just plug it back in! It will automatically resume collecting and sending data once it has power.
Where can I find the data and reports after a job is complete?
Once a Monitoring Session ends:
- Go to the Kahi Web App.
- Click on the Job Sites tab.
- Select the Job Site you want.
- Navigate to the Monitoring tab.
From there, you can:
- View session data and history.
- Download or export reports as PDF files.
How do I generate a monitoring report for a job site?
- Open the Kahi Web App and go to the desired Job Site.
- Click into the Monitoring tab.
- Use the Generate Report option to create a PDF.
- You can print or email the report from your preferred tool.
What do the different chamber status indicators mean in the web app?
Each chamber displays a status badge:
- Active – Sensor(s) are installed and currently collecting data.
- Complete – All sensors have been removed and the chamber is no longer collecting data.
These help you track which zones are still live during and after a job.
How is Grain Depression Calculated?
Grain Depression is equal to the GPP of ambient air in the chamber around the Inlet minus the GPP of the Equipment Outlet.
Example:
Room air GPP (inlet) = 72 GPP
Dehumidifier exhaust GPP (outlet) = 40 GPP
Grain Depression = 72 - 40 = 32
Why are two sensors in the same chamber capturing different temperatures of RH readings?
This is may be due to:
- Sensor placement: Proximity to equipment, windows, or vents can cause local variation.
- Acclimation time: If one sensor was recently installed, it may not have had time to stabilize.
- Drafts or sunlight: Environmental micro-conditions can create hotspots or cold zones.
- Battery level or probe issues: A sensor with low battery or a loose probe may report inaccurately.
Ensure consistent placement, avoid direct sunlight or airflow, and let sensors acclimate for at least 30 minutes before use.
